Sometimes having good eyes and knowing a little something about what you collect pays off. I saw this collie listed online as “Light Yellow / Ivory.” Upon examining the photos, it really didn’t look like ivory. I had a hunch and I took a chance – I was right.
This collie is actually Custard glass. Custard is a very pale opaque white glass with a yellow / green tint. Like Vaseline glass, it gets its color from uranium oxide, and fluoresces green when exposed to ultraviolet light. You may notice that it seems to look a little greener in daylight, due to the presence of ultraviolet radiation in natural sunlight.
In addition to the “M” on the left side, this figurine is also marked with an “M” on the base, identifying it as one of the older, “pre-1981” Mossers.
